AI competitor analysis

AI competitor analysis you can check against the source.

AI tools for competitor analysis are only as good as what the AI reads. ChatGPT, Claude and Cursor can write a sharp comparison, but they cannot tell you which pages they missed. PMM Tools captures a competitor’s website as markdown and a screenshot per page and serves those files to your AI over MCP. Your AI does the analysis. You check each claim against the page it came from.

The coverage problem

Your AI can’t analyze a page it never finds.

Ask an AI to analyze a competitor and it works from what it can reach in that moment: a few search results, the pages it browsed, or the text you pasted. The answer reads well either way.

The gaps do not show. A new pricing page, a product launch or a comparison page aimed at your buyers can sit outside the conversation, and the AI will not flag what it never saw.

Coverage starts from the whole site. PMM Tools reads the competitor’s sitemap and navigation, builds a collection of its pages, and lets you decide what belongs. You see what was captured and what was not before you ask a question.

Source files, not summaries

Why the AI needs the source files, not a summary.

A summary is someone else’s reading of the page. It drops the details positioning work depends on: the exact wording, the plan limits, the way a feature is framed.

When the AI reads the page itself, it can answer the question you have today, in your context: your product, your customers, your angle. A generic summary cannot know those.

PMM Tools keeps each page as clean markdown for the model and a screenshot for you, with its source URL and capture date. The AI reads the markdown. The screenshot shows you what the competitor actually published.

How it works

How PMM Tools feeds Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor over MCP.

  1. Step 01

    Add a competitor

Enter a domain. PMM Tools finds pages through the sitemap and site navigation. Keep the product, pricing and comparison pages, and exclude the noise.

  2. Step 02

    Capture the pages

Each page is captured as markdown and a screenshot, with its source URL and capture date. Refresh on demand. Scheduled refreshes come with every paid plan.

  3. Step 03

    Connect your AI

Add the PMM Tools MCP server to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Claude Code or Codex CLI. Claude and ChatGPT connect by signing in. Claude Code, Cursor and Codex CLI can use a connection key.

  4. Step 04

    Ask your question

Your AI lists the competitor’s pages, reads the ones it needs, and answers from them. The analysis runs in your AI. PMM Tools never bills you for AI usage.

Prompts to try

How to use ChatGPT for competitor analysis (or Claude, or Cursor).

Connect PMM Tools, then ask in plain language. These prompts work the same way in ChatGPT, Claude and Cursor. Your AI picks the tools it needs.

  • List the pages you have for [competitor]. Which questions can you answer from them, and what is missing?

    Tools: pmm_competitor_pages, pmm_competitor_coverage

  • Read the pricing and product pages for [competitor] and compare their packaging with ours. For each point, quote the line it comes from and give the capture date.

    Tools: pmm_competitor_pages, pmm_competitor_read

  • What changed on [competitor]’s site since [date]? List the substantive changes and the pages they are on.

    Tools: pmm_changes_since

  • Go through the pages for [competitor] and exclude the ones that do not help with positioning. Give a reason for each.

    Tools: pmm_competitor_get_urls, pmm_competitor_validate

Verify

How to verify what the AI says.

  1. Ask for the source

Tell the AI to quote the line and name the page and capture date for every claim. A claim with no page behind it is a guess.

  2. Open the page

Find the capture in PMM Tools and read the markdown. Check the screenshot when layout, packaging or emphasis matter.

  3. Check the date

Every capture is dated. If a page is old, refresh it before you act on what it says.

  4. Check the coverage

Ask the AI what it did not read. A missing pricing page changes the answer.

Questions

What to know before you start

What is AI competitor analysis?

It is competitor research done with an AI assistant such as ChatGPT, Claude or Cursor: reading competitor websites, comparing positioning, pricing and features, and drafting the findings. The result depends on what the AI reads.

Can ChatGPT do competitor analysis on its own?

For individual pages, yes. ChatGPT can browse and summarize what it finds for the question you asked. PMM Tools builds a collection across a competitor’s website and keeps it, so ChatGPT can return to the same pages in every conversation.

Does PMM Tools do the analysis for me?

No. PMM Tools provides the source material. Your own AI does the analysis, with your product and positioning in context. There are analysis features in the app, but you can always use the files directly.

Which AI tools can connect?

Claude (claude.ai, Claude Desktop and Claude Code), ChatGPT, Cursor and Codex CLI, over MCP. The MCP quickstart has a setup guide for each.

Will it find every page on a competitor’s site?

No discovery process guarantees complete coverage. You can review the collection, add pages it missed and exclude the ones you do not need. Your plan sets how many pages are kept fresh.

Does using it cost me AI tokens?

PMM Tools never bills you for AI usage. Your plan covers captures. The analysis runs in the AI you already use.
